Fasteners are important during any construction project because they help to anchor something, such as an air conditioning unit, into a base (concrete floor, for example). This article discusses the two common kinds of fasteners that you can use during your project. Use this information to select the best fastener for your needs.

Mechanical Fasteners

Mechanical fasteners depend on friction to stay firmly anchored in the base. The installation process starts with drilling a hole of the appropriate diameter within a substrate or base. A plug is then placed into the hole before the screw or fastener is driven into that plug. The resultant grip of the plug on the screw helps that fastener to hold the design load without failing.

One key advantage of mechanical fasteners is that you can place the load upon them as soon as the fastener has been installed. This prevents you from wasting time as you wait for the fastener to set. Mechanical fasteners are also more affordable than other kinds of fasteners, such as chemical fasteners.

However, it is not advisable to use mechanical fasteners in outdoor applications. This is because this type of fastener isn't watertight due to the gaps that can remain between the plug and the screw. Corrosion and other issues can therefore develop.

Chemical Fasteners

Chemical fasteners require a hole to be drilled in the same way that a hole for mechanical fasteners is prepared. This hole is then cleaned carefully to remove all debris. A chemical, such as an epoxy adhesive, is pumped into the hole using an appropriate tool. The anchor/fastener is placed in the hole so that the chemical sets and hardens when that anchor/fastener is in its rightful position. Loads can only be placed on the fastener once the chemical has fully cured.

Chemical fasteners are ideal for outdoor applications since the chemical creates an airtight seal around the fastener. Make sure you allow time for the chemicals to cure before placing a load on the fastener. For example, you may have to wait for about 24-hours before placing the signage of your company on the fasteners.

Use the information above to select the most appropriate type of fastener for your project. Remember that each fastener has a specific load rating. Select the fasteners whose load rating is slightly higher than what your applications call for so that you will be sure that your products, such as signage or AC units, will remain held in place.
